SCONUL Seven Pillar Model and Information Literacy
1. What is Information Literacy?
Information Literacy is an umbrella term that encompasses concepts such as digital literacy, visual literacy and media literacy, academic literacy, information handling, information skills, data curation and data management.
It is introduced by zurkowski in 1974.
Information literacy is the ability to recognize the need for information to solve problems and develop ideas; pose an important question; use a variety of information gathering strategies; locate relevant arid appropriate information; assess information for quality, authority, accuracy, and authenticity. It includes the ability to use the practical and conceptual tools of information technology, to understand, form, format, location, and access methods, how information is situated and produced, research processes, and to format and publishing textual and multimedia formats and to adapt to emerging technologies.
2. Type of Information Literacy:

3. Information Literacy Model:
In Order to achieve information literacy goals, an information scientist has invented different models. These models help students and teachers to reach the ultimate goal of the education, with specific guided plan several such popular models are available such as ‘Big Six’, ‘Information Search Process’, ‘Kuhlthaus’, and ‘SCOUNL (Standing Conference Of National And University Libraries)’ etc.
The various IL modules should be designed based on user studies involving assessment of user’s informationseeking behaviour, their needs and skill gaps. Information literacy models depend on individuals strategies as they search for information:
i. Linear: linear model means the step must be performed in a set manner
ii. Non-linear: a non-linear model means that an individual passes through different stages at different times
depending on the information need
4. SCONUL
(Seven Pillar Of Information Literacy): Standing Conference Of National And University Libraries now known as Society of College National And
University Libraries was founded in 1950 and in the year 1990 the SCONUL working group on Information Literacy has developed information skills in higher education it is known as the Seven pillars Of Information Skills Model. During the year 2012, this model has been updated and extended the concept of information literacy in the era of ICT.
5. Seven pillar model of information skills:
Seven skills are:-
1. Recognize Information Needs;
2. Distinguish ways of addressing a gap;
3. Contempt strategies for locating;
4. Locate and access information;
5. Compare and evaluate;
6. Organize apply and communicate;
7. Synthesis and create.
6. How to use this model:
The model is conceived as a three-dimensional circular “building”, founded on an information landscape that comprises the information world as it is perceived by an individual at that point in time. The picture is also coloured by an individual’s personal information literacy landscape, in other words, their aptitude, background and experiences, which will affect how they respond to any information literacy development.
IDENTIFY: Able to identify a personal need for information
SCOPE: Can assess current knowledge and identify gaps
PLAN: Construct strategies for locating information and data
GATHER: Can locate and access the information and data they need
EVALUATE: Can review the research process and compare and evaluate information and data
MANAGE: Can organize information professionally ethically
PRESENT: Can apply the knowledge, present the results of the research, synthesizing new and old information, create new knowledge and disseminate
